Berwick's Burrell Collection - new mobile App

Berwick's Burrell Collection - new mobile App

Berwick's Burrell Collection Project’s volunteers have interviewed people from North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders who have memories of Sir William and Berwick Museum at the time when he lived at nearby Hutton Castle. The stories all relate to Sir William at the end of his long life (he died at Hutton Castle, aged 96 years in 1958).

Stories include “eccentric” behaviour such as hiding a newly acquired painting behind the bathroom door so that burglars would not find it, but these are counterbalanced with memories of his “marvellous brain” which had helped him to make so much money in his family shipping business.

All recordings and research will be held by Berwick Record Office for future generations, but one legacy of the project is the new Berwick’s Burrell Collection mobile App which holds 13 snippets from these recordings.

The App also holds a selection of 20 pieces from the Collection with background information on each piece. The Berwick's Burrell Collection App is available to download to iPads free from the App Store.

Further snippets from the oral history project can be found on the Friends of Berwick and District Museum and Archives website.
